TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is closing its Califo
ia design center

by the end of June as the automaker shifts its design mandate to

developing world cars instead of regional ones.

Most design functions at the Cypress, Calif., studio will be shifted

back to Japan, and 60 employees will be let go, Mitsubishi spokesman

Tetsuji Inoue said today.
